Our Story

Caledonia Excavating was incorporated as a business with the State of Michigan in 1990. It was the vision of Marv and Monte Tolan to work on side projects at night and on the weekends while keeping their full-time jobs during the week. In 1998, Monte had the opportunity to go full-time with his growing business. Marv would continue with his leadership role at the original company and took on more of a consultant role for Caledonia Excavating, always there to lend advice and a helping hand when needed. Caledonia Excavating mastered the craft of developing land for housing plats to serve a thriving regional economy. The 2008 recession forced diversification and introduced our expanding company to more municipality work. We have continued to try and balance our workload, while still maintaining a focus on housing plats.

Caledonia Excavating was rooted as a family-oriented company and we try to instill this value within all our employees. Our employees and subcontractors have always been - and always will be - the backbone of this company. It is our passion and duty to do the best work we can and to complete the job for all of our customers.
